Welcome to our 8th Grade Writing Workshop! This is my 28th year teaching and my first year at Rockvale Middle. I am so excited to be a Raven!
This course is designed to enhance writing skills through various genres and styles. Mentor texts and research-based strategies will be used to provide rigorous writing instruction to all writers. Students will engage in writing practices, peer reviews, and revision processes to develop voice and proficiency as a writer. Using a workshop approach to teach writing offers several fun and engaging benefits for students. These benefits include: collaborative writing, creative freedom, increased motivation, and students taking a greater sense of ownership and pride in their writing.
Course Objectives:
1. Develop and refine writing skills across multiple genres.
2. Become immersed in the writing process: prewriting, drafting, revising, editing, and publishing.
3. Engage in constructive peer reviews and provide meaningful feedback.
4. Explore various literary techniques and their applications in writing.
5. Improve grammar, punctuation, and overall writing mechanics.

Writers notebook (composition notebook)
Classroom Expectations:
1. Respect: Treat everyone with respect and kindness.
2. Participation: Actively participate in discussions, activities, and peer reviews.
3. Punctuality: Arrive on time and be prepared for class.
4. Integrity: Submit original work and uphold academic honesty.
5. Effort: Put forth your best effort in all assignments and activities.
